The Magical number 7

As humans, we have a limited capacity to consider our alternatives.

Within our brains, there is a limited amount of shelf space available for us to temporarily put our options on to examine them and make our decision. We have cognitive limits to the amount of information we can process at any given time. When it comes to memory capacity, it seems that the limit for humans is seven, plus or minus two. This comes from a 1956 paper by cognitive psychologist George A. Miller called The Magical Number Seven, Plus or Minus Two. He referred to it as channel capacity, the number of cognitive and perceptual tasks we can successfully undertake as humans. It seems that we come with a predetermined number of “slots” available for us to temporarily swap in items that we wish to consider.

What’s a Google ?

Googol” is the mathematical term for a 1 followed by 100 zeros. The term was coined by Milton Sirotta, nephew of American mathematician Edward Kasner, and was popularized in the book, “Mathematics and the Imagination” by Kasner and James Newman. Google’s play on the term reflects the company’s mission to organize the immense amount of information available on the web. and here comes the reason why Elias and Carol named their son Oliver Google Kai and this reason is to have next generations connected to as many friends, people as possible.

Sondage Presidentielle

Within the framework of this study, we questioned the major search engines (Google, Yahoo! , Live Search) and tempted to identify the Web sites which profit from the best visibility for the Presidential Elections which will take place in a few weeks in France (see our methodology).

Which are the most visible sites in a total way?

For 40 key words relating to the Presidential Elections (electoral program, election, elections, vote, votes, survey, election presidential, presidential elections, presidential 2007, etc), we classified the 200 most visible Web sites on the three major engines. Here ten first (see complete list of the 100 first):

Among the first 200 classified Web sites, only those of Francois Bayrou (bayrou.fr in 58ème position) and of Domenica Voynet (voynet2007.fr in 129ème place) are present among the principal candidates. That of Jean-Pierre Chevènement (chevenement.fr) is 108ème, but he is not candidate (he supports Ségolène Royal). It is astonishing that the sites of the other major candidates are not visible on these key words, whereas one finds there those of Anpe (anpe.fr, 13th), of the Camembert cheese President (president.fr, 23rd) and even of the team of football of Racing Club of Strasbourg (rcstrasbourg.fr, 182ème)… Perhaps the sites of the candidates of UMP and the PS, in particular, more centered their strategy of visibility on the sponsored bonds than on natural referencing…

Which are the most visible sites about Nicolas Sarkozy? I think Sarkozy Video G8 *June 2007

For this study, we carried out same work as previously on the three major engines, but on two requests only: “Nicolas Sarkozy� and “Sarkozy�. Here the 10 most visible sites on these terms (77 sites obtained at least 1 point - to see complete list of the 50 first):

That is to say 5 official sites or “pro-sarkozyâ€? and 1 site “anti-Sarkozyâ€?. To note the presence in 3rd position of the site presenting the Iznogoud film of Patrick Braoudé. This place must with an action of Google Bombing initiated in October 2005 on the name of the Minister of Interior Department.

In addition, here some key words for which the official site of Nicolas Sarkozy appeared on first page on Google at the beginning of March 2007 (positions can have fluctuated at the time when you will read these lines):

Which are the most visible sites about Ségolène Royal?

Identical work for Ségolène Royal that for its adversary of UMP, with the key words “Royalâ€? and “Ségolène Royalâ€? (108 sites obtained at least 1 point - to see complete list of the 50 first) for which the most visible sites are as follows:

As for Nicolas Sarkozy, the official site of the candidate of the Socialist Party is first, and the classification lists 5 sites “pro� and only one “anti� site. The two candidates are thus very close in this study in terms to “virtual sympathizers�…

Here also some key words for which the official site of Ségolène Royal appeared on first page on Google at the beginning of March 2007 (positions can have fluctuated at the time when you will read these lines):

Oddly, we had all the sorrows of the world to find words key on which the site positions in the first positions of Google. Natural referencing seems to be completely forgotten in the strategy of visibility of the candidate of the PS.

Which are the most visible sites about Francois Bayrou?

This study is supplemented with the requests “Bayrou� and “Francois Bayrou� who reveal “Signal 10� following (84 sites obtained at least 1 point - to see complete list of the 50 first):

One will note the presence here, as for his two assistants, of the official site (bayrou.fr) in pole-position, but also the second place of the site of his party (udf.org), which is oddly the case neither of Nicolas Sarkozy (the site of UMP points however in 11th position on its name), nor of Ségolène Royal. On the other hand, only a site of support comes to supplement the official site. No the “antiâ€? site at the horizon either. The “third manâ€? would it start less passions that its competitors?

Here finally, as for its two other assistants, some key words for which the official site of Francois Bayrou appeared on first page on Google at the beginning of March 2007 (positions can have fluctuated at the time when you will read these lines):

It will be noted that, according to our tests, the official site of Francois Bayrou is, by far, that which, among those studied here, arises best on good number of key words having milked to the exercise of the capacity (but not only, as the examples above show it…). There is even a pit between the site of this candidate, who seems to have made the choice of a good optimization of his pages according to the criteria of relevance of the search engines, and that of his challengers…

Conclusions of order general

- One can note that for each of the three candidates, the official site of their election campaign is in first position for their respective name and obtains, therefore, best visibility.

- The sites sympathizers are largely more present than the satirical sites even “anti�…

- If they are well classified on their name, candidates of UMP and of the PS (and in particular this last) seem on the other hand to have neglected their referencing on the majority of the key words having milked with the elections. The site of Francois Bayrou seems much more optimized on this level.

- It is on the name of Ségolène Royal which there is the most visible different sites on the engines (108) whereas one finds only 84 of them on the name of Francois Bayrou and 77 for Nicolas Sarkozy.

- The Wikipedia site, free encyclopaedia, are omnipresent in each “Signal 5� suggested.

- This mini-study also shows the importance of the video in the countryside since sites like Dailymotion or Kewego arise in “Signal 10� of each candidate.

Lastly, to finish, note that the Journal site of the Net proposed, a few days ago days of that, a study close to this one, but with a different approach. Yahoo! France also proposes a classification “political Buzz� of the key words - having milked with the elections - generally required on its search engine. Their conclusions will supplement with great interest our work on the subject.
