At 21 years, 11 months, Joe Cada is the youngest WSOP Main Event Champion in history.

Joe Cada – Know Your Champion

21 year old Michigan native Joseph Cada has managed to do exactly what Peter Eastgate did in 2008. Not only has he won the main event of the World Series of Poker but he has also become the youngest ever winner of it. His prize of $8.5 million is a great start to adult life for this fledgling poker professional who already enjoyed plenty of success online. Anyone thinking this 21 year old is another “flash in the pan” winner of the tournament ought to think again.

Despite only recently being old enough to drink in the USA, Joe has been playing online poker for over six years now. Along with his brother Jerome they started playing when he was 16, depositing 25 dollars into an online poker site. After running these 25 dollars into 250, Joe demonstrated a control not usually seen by poker players in pressuring Jerome to cash out. They decided to play on, eventually tilting the money away. Joseph was undeterred by this setback and carried on playing. By the time he reached college he was a regular winner in the cash games. He left college like so many other poker players after two semesters and became a professional poker player.

His love of online poker continued and he is a regular winner in some of the big online tournaments. His biggest wins include $147,500 for taking down the $750,000 guarantee in January 2008 and more recent wins include a $45,000 score in a $200,000 guarantee $150 re-buy event online. He plays under the username “jcada99” and has had many other smaller wins ranging from $5,000 – $20,000.

Prior to participating in the main event of the WSOP, Joe entered the $2,500 No Limit Texas Hold’em event on 5th June 2009 and had a great run in the tournament before finishing 64th out of 1088 entries for $6,608 dollars. He was eliminated by Bertrand “Elky” Grospellier. He entered the $1,500 No Limit Event on 16th June along with 2094 others and finished a very impressive 17th place for $21,533. This allowed Joe to buy into the main event for $10,000 dreaming like so many others of catching the biggest tournament of them all. We all know how that turned out for him. He never played online poker on Facebook.

One cannot help but be impressed by his approach to the game. In interviews after winning his seat at the final table he said he would not be increasing the stakes of his usual $10/$20 No Limit Heads up game because he felt he was not ready. He said that he plays for the bracelet and not the money, knowing success will earn the money for him. Joe believes that having ran well in the main event he now does not complain about the bad beats he suffers online and his play has improved as a result. Joe advocates playing heads up online as it teaches you how to deal with swings and “never gives you a hand off so you are always learning”.

In-between playing the WSOP main event and the final table Joe played in many events including the WSOPE and EPT to keep sharp and prepare. He plans to travel widely after the final table and as the winner of the tournament he will be treated quite rightly as a VIP wherever he goes. Cada was tipped as a player to watch before the final table having played back to the great Phil Ivey on numerous occasions and these tips proved correct in identifying a solid young poker professional with the world at his feet but not all online French poker players.

After fortunately hitting a King on the river to knock out Antoine Saout to go heads up against Darvin Moon he showed great resilience as Moon gained a large chip lead. Cada fought back and made a fantastic call in what turned out to be the key hand when he called Moons all-in re-raise with second pair and Moon missed his open ended straight draw. There is plenty of evidence to suggest that Cada’s win in the main event is no fluke and he will be a regular and popular player on the live circuit for many years to come. He looks like he will be an excellent ambassador for online poker and live poker alike.
